What is soft tissue Augmentation?

The use of filler substances to improve lines and wrinkles is called soft tissue augmentation. Fillers are used primarily in the lower face, including the cheeks, around the mouth and chin area. Fillers are great for erasing laugh lines around the mouth and for softening those marionette lines that give you mouth a sad look. We also use fillers to enhance the lip for lip augmentation or to fill in those pesky little lines that make your lipstick run.

There are many fillers to choose from. For the laugh lines and marionette lines Dr. Farris generally prefer hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane® and Juvederm®. These fillers are sugar substances that are naturally occurring in the skin. They are easy to inject and great for deeper lines and wrinkles. They allow us to soften lines and wrinkles and to add volume to face in places where it is needed to restore the face to a more youthful appearance. For fine lines and wrinkles human collagens like Cosmoderm® and Cosmoplast® work best.

Smokers also develop deep lines around the mouth that come from pursing the lips around the cigarette. For lip augmentation we use either hyaluronic acid or collagen fillers. And, sometimes both!
